Let them eat… something

There will officially be food at our wedding! Hooray!

After booking our venue, one of the very next items I wanted to check off the “to-do” list was book a caterer. They say when planning a wedding you should have three big-ticket items that you’re not willing to compromise on – spend the money where it matters to you, and make compromises other places. Those three items to us were:

  1. Photography – which we immediately booked with Ben Powell, the brother of a really good friend of mine. It was so important for us to choose someone who we trust, who will capture the important moments and tiny details of our day.
  2. Venue – which you already know all about (if not, click here!)
  3. Food!

Dan and I love (love, love, LOVE) food. Okay maybe I’m obsessive about food and he doesn’t have taste buds, but, I digress. Food was very high in the priorities list to us. I do quite a bit of cooking, and my dad is a chef, so I knew I wanted the food to be a big deal. I did a bunch of research, got about 4 different price quotes (all weirdly different, by the way. The wedding industry makes no sense), and ultimately we went with Fusions because:

  1. They’re really nice! Blaise, the woman who I was working with, was responsive to emails and phone calls, and sent me a proposal while she was onsite at another event. I just know they’ll be attentive to us and give us what we want
  2. They’re able to do a family style meal for us. That may seem weird to some people. Family style at a wedding? But for us, it made a lot of sense. Along with my love of food comes a love of SHARING food. I can never decide what I want to eat for dinner, I want to try everything! So I want my friends and family to get to try everything on the menu, without having to wait in line for a buffet. Win-win
  3. The chef is super creative. We went to our “meet and treat”, which was our first tasting. The chef made an item off of our original menu (which as it turns out won’t be on our final menu, but not because it wasn’t delicious!), and while we were eating he came out to talk to us about exactly what we had in mind. I told him I was going for an overall “Fall” theme, and he ran with it! He pulled so many ideas out of thin air that incorporated squash, maple, walnuts, cheese, apples… everything I think of when it comes to fall. I am so SO excited to see how everything turns out!

They were a little on the pricey side, but since we wanted family style, it actually worked out. The other caterers we talked to wanted to add thousands of dollars onto our quote just to serve family style, where as Fusions only added the extra servers it would take. They’re flexible with our guest count, and really nice and easy to work with. If I had to give out advice (which I don’t, but I will anyway), I would say pick your top 3 priorities and stick to them. I’m so excited about our photos, venue, and food. Even if that means I have to spend a little less on the dress or the music, I know I’ll be happy with the outcome.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a “runner” by nature. In elementary school, when they made all the kids run “the mile”, I was always the chubby-ish kid finishing dead last feeling sweaty and nauseous the rest of the day. When I played rec soccer, they turned me into a goalie because I couldn’t keep up with the rest of the team.

I’m not telling you this so you’ll think I had a terrible child hood riddled with mean kids who teased me all the time. I’m telling you this so you’ll understand what it means when I say, “I RAN A FREAKING 5K LAST WEEKEND!”

So, I’ll say it again. I RAN A FREAKING 5K LAST WEEKEND. All 3.1 glorious miles of it. I ran the Color Run with Katie (my best friend) and Patrick, (my roommate, best friend’s fiancé, and runner extraodinaire). I did a little bit of “training”. Over the last few months I’ve been running on and off, working on the Couch to 5k app on my phone and running around the 2 mile loop of a lake near my house with Jameson every now and then. Just last week I was able to run around the lake without stopping, and I was so proud of myself! I was a tiny bit worried about the 5k, because (a) I hadn’t run more than 2 miles in a row yet and (b) I was running with Patrick, who runs ultramarathons for funzies. Yeah, he’s crazy. Let’s move on.

Dan came as moral support/photographer. What a nice fiancé I have 🙂

Anyway, I made it! Slowly but surely, 35 minutes after we started our jog, all 3.1 miles, four color stations, and a lot of doubts were behind us. I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

Busy, Busy

Excuses, excuses.

But really! I’ve been busy. Since we last spoke:

  • We’ve booked a caterer for our wedding
  • We’ve decided on an officiant
  • We’ve figured out what to do about a DJ
  • I ran a 5k
  • I joined a gym
  • I’ve done lots of cooking/cleaning/housekeeping/working/being a normal person stuff

All of these topics deserve their own post, so I promise they are all coming soon. Hold me to it, people!
